Bernadette Mertens-McAllister
This image is composed of five photographs arranged with in a single frame, each one torn to highlight the precariousness of time. Why windows? I offer them as an invitation for viewers to discover their own metaphors: are they symbols of fresh morning air, freedom, and gratitude for the day ahead? Or do they evoke a sense of safety-a tranquil vantage point for introspection and contemplation? I chose French windows because they hold personal significance for me.
Bernadette studied fine art photography in Brussels, Belgium. In California, her mentor Donald Ross introduced her to Ansel Adams and other prominent members of the Sierra Club Group. During the seventies, she traveled extensively as a freelancer and ran her own photography studio in Sidney, BC. Although Bernadette now embraces digital photography, she still misses working with black and white prints in the darkroom. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the US, and Mexico.
