“Orbweavers” was created using a flatbed scanner to record the movements of tiny (ready to hatch) orbweaver spiders. After placing their clump of web onto the glass scanner surface they exploded into dozens of individuals - tiny spiderlings running everywhere. Arachnophobic me wrangling with a soft brush… perhaps they needed something more natural to attach themselves to? - I placed a rudbeckia flower onto the glass - immediately all the spiderlings went to work. Within an hour the flower was bound to the glass, most of it’s surface covered by a dense web. Working with live specimens is often rewarding - scanners capture movement differently than analog or digital cameras record motion. As the scanner’s sensor bar passes by, movements and shapes are recorded as colourful RGB streaks or tracks. My fingerprint at bottom right serves as a indicator of scale and signature. This seminal editioned image is varnished and cold adhesive mounted.
